About Founder Randi Carter
Recognizing the need for those living an active lifestyle to still enjoy healthy, wholesome and flavorsome foods,
I founded Delicious Planet in Seattle in 1998. I began the business as a Personal Chef service, personally visiting
and cooking meals in people’s homes. As my client list grew, Delicious Planet evolved into a gourmet home delivery
service to better accommodate those it served. I was trained in Nutrition at Seattle’s Bastyr University, an accredited
private institution known as one of the world’s leading centers in the natural health sciences, where I advanced my knowledge
in wholesome, organic cooking to promote a healthy lifestyle. My goal as founder and nutritionist for Delicious Planet is to
keep the service as client-focused as it was in its initiation by using only the highest quality ingredients, paying close
attention to clients’ needs and doing my best to educate along the way.
About the Food
Delicious Planet is not "organic when available". We are almost entirely organic - a big difference!
We are committed to chemical-free meals and a chemical-free environment. Thanks for supporting organic farms
and business as we all strive for the best tasting food, maximum health, and to save the planet!
Some examples of our high-quality ingredients: Draper Valley Organic Chicken, Sustainably Harvested Wild Fish,
St. Helen's Natural Beef, Organic Spectrum Extra Virgin Olive Oil and
Canola Oils, Frontier-brand Organic Spices, Sea Salt that contains many minerals
of the sea - not just straight sodium, natural sweeteners like Sucanat, Organic Honey, Organic Maple Syrup, and
only filtered water in soaking our beans and cooking our food.
Our mission is to feed as many people with organic, whole foods as we can! We aim to introduce you to new, yummy foods,
save you a lot of time, and to educate you along the way. We truly care!
Our Philosophy of Nutrition
We all know, deep down, what we should be
eating. Skip the fad diets and get down to basic, wholesome foods. What
you should know is that it doesn't mean that your fun is over! Whole
foods can be very colorful, filling, and TASTY!
Why whole, organic foods? This way of eating means that you have
taken "just food" and turned it into something wonderful. No additives,
preservatives, fake food colorings, excess sodium, sugar, enhancers,
etc. Fresh produce farmed by people who care about treating soil and the
earth respectfully. Meat from animals that have been raised with organic
feeds and treated humanely, not injected with growth hormone,
antibiotics and living in stacked cages in huge warehouses. This is the
way to eat if you want to feel great, keep fit, prevent disease, and
enjoy mealtime! Let's get back to eating at the table with family,
friends, or just with ourselves and a nutritious, high-fiber, low-fat
meal. We know that what you put into your body matters. You do too!
What will you see on our menus? For one thing, a lot of color will be
evident. It is a known fact that the deepest colored fruits and
vegetables typically contain the most nutrients. Since I am a
nutritionist, I am planning a balanced menu with your health in mind. I
choose my produce in tune with the seasons and emphasize those with the
highest functional components. I am talking about carotenoids,
flavonoids, saponins, fibers, fatty acids, sulphurophanes, pre and
pro-biotics, plant sterols, thiols, phytoestrogens, tannins, etc. They
have been featured in recent research articles for their amazing health
benefits.
We cook with only filtered water because if you don't filter your
water, you ARE the filter. We can't imagine giving you soups
and rice cooked with tap water that contain many "extras" that our
bodies do not need to fight. Our immune systems are plenty busy fighting
off the everyday "bugs" and general pollutants that we encounter every
day. Keep your immune system in check with good nutrition,
organic food, and filtered water so that it will be ready for the bigger
stuff that comes along.
What about taste? We cook many ethnic dishes, and are always keeping
our clients happy with exciting new foods. When our clients eat this food we want them to feel
nourished - this food was made with not only love, but by someone who
studied nutrition. You can stop worrying about getting enough nutrients
in your diet. We handle it all for you - the planning, shopping,
cooking, packaging, and delivery. Now what will you do with all of this
extra time?
Sorry, but we have to say it - the typical American diet kills people
through heart disease, obesity, cancer, et cetera. Living on refined
flour, sugar, caffeine, high-fat, high-protein diets, and soda is just
not your best bet for longevity. Even if this service is not for you, we
encourage you to shop at places like PCC, Whole Foods, and Madison
Market to buy organic groceries and filtered water for yourself.
Our advice beyond ordering our food is to limit your intake of caffeine, refined sugars and flours, alcohol, smoking
, etc. Choose lower fat options at restaurants and take half home for another meal! Be sure to get in some form of
exercise at least 30 minutes and drink 8 classes of filtered water daily.
Why Organic?
- Protect Future Generations: The average child receives 4 times
more exposure than an adult to at least 8 widely used cancer-causing
pesticides in food. The food choices you make now will impact your
child's health in the future.
- Prevent Soil Erosion: Soil is the foundation of the food chain
in organic farming. In conventional farming the soil is used more as a
medium for holding plants in a vertical position so they can be
chemically fertilized. As a result, American farms are suffering from
the worst soil erosion in history.
- Protect Water Quality: The Environmental Protection Agency
estimates pesticides (some cancer causing) contaminate the groundwater
in 38 states, polluting the primary source of drinking water for more
than half the country's population.
- Save Energy: Modern farming uses more petroleum than any
other single industry, consuming 12% of the country's total energy
supply. More energy is now used to produce synthetic fertilizers to
till, cultivate, and harvest all the crops in the U.S. Organic farming
is still mainly based on labor-intensive practices such as weeding by
hand and using green manures and crop covers rather than synthetic
fertilizers to build up soil.
- Keep Chemicals Off Your Plate: EPA considers that 60% of
all herbicides, 90% of all fungicides and 30% of all insecticides are
carcinogenic. Pesticides are poisons designed to kill living organisms,
and can also be harmful to humans in addition to cancer, pesticides are
implicated in birth defects, nerve damage, and genetic
mutation.
- Protect Farm Worker Health: A National Cancer Institute
study found that farmers exposed to herbicides had a 6 times greater
risk than non-farmers of contracting cancer. Field workers suffer the
highest rates of occupational illness in California.
- Help Small Farmers: It's estimated that the United States
has lost more than 650,000 family farms in the past decade, and with the
USDA predicting that half of this country's farm year 2000, organic
farming could be one of the few survival tactics left for family
farms.
- Support A True Economy: Although organic foods might seem
more expensive than conventional foods, conventional food prices do not
reflect hidden costs borne by the taxpayers, including nearly $74
billion in federal subsidies in 1988. Other hidden costs include
pesticide regulation and testing, hazardous waste disposal and clean-up,
and environmental damage.
- Promote Biodiversity: Mono-cropping is the practice of
planting large plots of land with the same crop year after year. The
lack of natural planting diversity has left the soil lacking in natural
minerals and nutrients. Single crops are more reliant on pesticides
while some insects have become genetically resistant to certain
pesticides.
- Flavor: There is a good reason why many chefs use organic
foods in their recipes- they taste better. Organic farming starts with
the nourishment of the soil, which eventually leads to the nourishment
of the plant and ultimately, our bodies.
